Monument to the Colonial Battle of 1849

On April 20, 1849, during the glorious spring campaign, a battle took place on the outskirts of Kőhidgyarmat between the Hungarian army and the Austrian imperial troops. The VII Corps, led by General András Gáspár, consisting of about 10,000 men, defeated and routed General Franz Wyss' elite brigade of 2,500 men. In the battle, which ended in a brilliant victory, General Ernő Poeltenberg, later a martyr of Arad, Colonels Lajos Zámbelly and János Horváth, and Major István Pongrácz also played an important role. Commander-in-Chief Artúr Görgei paid his personal respects at the scene.
