The 1848 War of Independence Memorial in Révkomárom
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
The monument is located near the central entrance of the Komárom cemetery. For a long time, the common grave of the soldiers who died heroically in the battles for Komárom during the War of Independence was marked by a simple mound in the local Catholic cemetery, where they held a memorial service on All Souls' Day; their former comrades. The members of the military association decided at their general meeting held on December 12, 1886, to erect a monument over the grave. The ceremonial inauguration of the monument took place on November 1, 1887. According to the Komárom Lapok, on that day, the military association was able to receive the monument made of Süttő limestone without any formality. According to the newspaper, religious reasons played a role in the lack of a ceremony. On the day of the handover, former Hungarian soldiers, Győző Szombathelyi, president of the Hungarian Soldiers' Association, Mayor József Tátray and Reformed Bishop Gábor Pap – former Hungarian soldiers – paid their respects at the common grave.
