The World War I and World War II memorial in Ipolybél
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
In the years following the reunification, the planned erection of a heroic monument in Bélen failed due to the differing opinions surrounding the location. The monument was only erected in 1994, and was renovated in 2018 with funds from the Bethlen Gábor Fund. ; Ipolybél, which had 509 inhabitants in 1910, had 21 military dead in World War I. The fighting events of World War I avoided this region, while the Second World War not only endangered and claimed the lives of soldiers fighting on the front. From the summer of 1944, air attacks and night bombings became regular along the Ipoly, one of which also claimed deadly civilian casualties in Bélen: a shell hit a shelter and killed seven people. 13 soldiers from Ipolybél lost their lives on the battlefields.
