Assakürt Ghyczy Castle
Building, structure
The castle is a rectangular building with a north-south longitudinal axis, with a round tower at each of its two western corners. It is a classical late Renaissance building, which was built by the Ghyczy family on the site of the former Assakürt castle in the 17th century. The descendants of the Ghyczys lived in Assakürt for centuries, the last inhabitant of the castle died in 1922, and with him the family became extinct. After the Second World War, the building housed a school, restaurant, pub, shop, warehouse, and the local football team's dressing room, and after the change of regime it was left to its fate. Its condition was particularly bad, it had lost its plaster, and the roof was incomplete in several places. The municipality received 1.3 million euros in EU funding for the renovation of the castle. The renovated building, which will continue to operate as a museum, opened to the public on August 18, 2012.
