The resting place of Károly Apponyi and his wife

Cemeteries, tombstones, grave sites

During the 1848 revolution and war of independence, Albert Apponyi's uncle, the hussar colonel Károly Apponyi (1805-1890), sided with the Habsburgs and fought with arms against his own nation in the army of Prince Windischgrätz, then Field Marshal Haynau. He commanded the imperial troops that occupied the city of Győr. After the suppression of the war of independence, he was promoted to general, which the Apponyi Memorial Book generously kept silent about, only mentioning that he participated in the battles in Italy. His position, according to which he chose the service of the emperor over the service of the nation, was not considered special in the given era. The Hungarian aristocracy and officers were divided by the dilemma of the 1848-49 revolution and war of independence: whether they owed loyalty to the Habsburg dynasty or to the homeland and nation. The politicians, diplomats and soldiers of the Apponyi family all chose the dynasty. ; In the interest of Hungarian officer training, General Apponyi and his brother (Albert's father) established a foundation on 20 February 1858 to support officer candidates trained at the Ludovika Academy. In this way, they revived a military foundation established in 1832 by their father, György Apponyi (1780-1849). Archival sources refer to it in German simply as the "Militär Erziehungs Schtiftung", in Hungarian as the "Gróf Apponyi Károly és György-félé katanyi évelési alapítvány". The family financed this foundation until 1872, after which, due to a dispute over the method of calculating interest, they got rid of it. Their debts arising from this were successfully settled between 1881 and 1887. Their support for Hungarian officer training also carried a political message in 1858. ; The descendants of Károly Apponyi also entered the service of the emperor and king. ; We can read about the death of Károly Apponyi's wife in the Tolnamegyei Közlöny published on January 7, 1909: "Our Lord's grief. The Lord of Tolnavár County, Count Géza Apponyi, is in deep and profound grief. His mother, the widowed Count Károlyné Apponyi, née Countess Leopoldina Klébelsberg, passed away peacefully in the Lord last Saturday in Vienna, where she had always lived, at the age of ninety-two. The deceased Countess was the only son of our Lord Count Géza Apponyi. The deceased was brought from Vienna to Eberhard and laid to rest in the family tomb there. The deceased mourns his aunt, the Minister of Religion and Public Education, Count Albert Apponyi."
