Ruins of Appony Castle
Building, structure
On the side of the Tribecs Mountains stand the ruins of Appony Castle, which was started by Péter Csák in the 13th century. Hussite troops captured it in 1430. It was renovated several times in the 16th and 17th centuries as part of the Turkish defense line. Due to ownership disputes among the Appony people, the castle was abandoned, and from 1645 the owners moved to the castle below the castle. According to legend, the lord of Appony Castle lived in a happy marriage, but fell in love with a village girl. His wife left him for this reason. He moved the girl up to the castle. Meanwhile, King Matthias arrived, who immediately fell in love with the young girl, so he stayed in Appony for a longer period. After getting tired of the girl, he gave her as a wife to one of his knights. Thus, the lord of Appony Castle "fell to the ground between two chairs". Neither his wife nor his love remained. We can still meet the sad lord of the castle, wandering in the rain among the ruins of the castle, mourning his two beautiful lost wives.
