The Vermes Villa

Building, structure

The plot of land for this imposing building in Dunaszerdahely was purchased in the very early 1900s by Ferenc Vermes, a landowner and district magistrate known as “the creator of Dunaszerdahely sports”. In 1905, he had a single-storey mansion built on the plot, which was then enlarged four years later, in 1909, and “expanded” and decorated with towers. ; During World War II, the building was first occupied by German and then Russian troops, and later, after the communist regime change, the castle operated as a pioneer home. ; Between 1988 and 2002, it housed the branch of the Slovak National Gallery, and after the building was purchased by the Dunaszerdahely City Government in 2005, the Contemporary Hungarian Gallery moved there after the renovations. The first chairman of its board of trustees was Péter Pázmány, the city's mayor at the time.
