On December 15, 1466, King Matthias granted the settlements of Nagyszombat and Izsap market town privileges. This ensured the exercise of local government and pallos rights for the two settlements. In addition, they were allowed to hold three national fairs a year and paid taxes only to the king. The charter was confirmed by several Habsburg rulers and Transylvanian princes in the 16th and 17th centuries. On the 530th anniversary of the granting of the charter, on August 24, 1996, the Municipality of Nagyszombat had a memorial column erected at the beginning of Öreg utca. The creator of the memorial column was the sculptor Péter Gáspár from Bratislava.
