The Vága National Flag

Statue, monument, memorial plaque

The Heroic Monument and the National Flag, inaugurated on October 1, 1939, were inaugurated by Dr. Pál Cselényi, Member of Parliament, Co-Chairman of the Grand Committee for the Relic National Flag. In his celebratory speech, he emphasized that “this inaugurated National Flag not only declares war on small-mindedness and cowardice, but also declares war on that eternally alarming, terrifying and goose-bumpy new defeatism, which in today’s historical times wants to weaken the nation’s self-confidence, challenge its optimism and cast doubt on its one and eternal vocation in the Carpathian Basin”. ; Guests attending the inauguration ceremony of the Heroes' Memorial and the National Flag: Dr. Pál Cselényi (member of the parliament and chief government advisor), Vilmos Jaross (chief governor), Baron József Majthényi (vice-governor), Dr. Sándor Balogh (on behalf of the front fighters), Dr. Károly Szabó (chief secretary), János Hunyad-Hulák (Kispest restaurateur and main organizer of the National Flag collection), József Lengyelfalussy (parish priest of Galánta), Ferenc Apponyi and Teréz Apponyi (guests from Budapest). ; The National Flag was made of merino wool in the national colors in size 150×300 cm in September 1939. Descendants from Alsógöd, Vác, Budapest, Nyircsaholy, Alag, Sopron, Rákospalota, Újpest, Kispest, Csepel (the latter 4 cities were annexed to Budapest in 1950 when Greater Budapest was created) and other villages and towns in the motherland (Forrók, Adamkók, Józsák, Kiácok, Karácsonyok, Horváthok, Puskások, Klaszták, Renácsok, Vágvölgyik, etc.) collected and made a National Flag for their beloved native village at the Budapest Oberbauer A. Utóda, Hungary's oldest church decoration and flag-making company. ; On the monument, the original Turul bird was smashed by Czech soldiers during the change of empire, the remains of which were "buried by good people for posterity". After the change of regime, it was dug up in 1993, a copy was made of it, and it was re-inaugurated. In the late 1990s, vandals also destroyed it. ; In 1992, the residents of the village began collecting signatures for the renovation of the Heroes' Memorial. The people of Vága also requested the restoration of the Hungária statue with 811 signatures. The old dream came true on August 22, 1993. The Heroes' Memorial was renovated and expanded with a memorial plaque containing the names of the victims of World War II. ; ; The Vága National Flag had been waiting for that moment for many decades (the village of Vága was annexed to Czechoslovakia on January 20, 1945 attached), when it can finally be returned to its original place. This unforgettable moment took place on the 100th anniversary of Trianon, on the National Unity Day, which was also held in the village. ; ; https://youtu.be/OY-MRfopM1k ; ; Vága, June 4, 2020.
