The Roman Catholic Church in Sklabonya

Building, structure

“The Roman Catholic church in Sklabonya is not far from the house where Mikszáth was born. According to Borovszky’s monograph on Nógrád County, the house of God here was built in 1396 in the Gothic style, but many repairs “stripped it of its originality”. It was transformed into a Renaissance form, then in the 18th century it was Baroque. According to the Schematism of the Bratislava-Nagyszombat Diocese, the church was built in 1346 and dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The statue of the patron saint can be seen on today’s beautiful, wooden main altar in the company of Saints Peter and Paul. … The Renaissance style is preserved in the nave of the church. The tower, which was built in the 18th century, is Baroque. Above the entrance door below it, in a recess, is a painted stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk.” ; ; “In The Late Lamb, Mikszáth mentions poor Jóska Csuri, the bell ringer of the Catholic church, who rang the bell so much before the storms that “his palms became blistered”. He did this in order to drive away “God’s black wrath” from the border. Mikszáth then continues his smile-inducing writing: “Well, if this is not just a stream and it doesn’t pour out the people of Bodo like a squirrel, then it’s still a good thing to be a Christian Catholic - in a Lutheran country.”
