The Sikabony Pietà – the statue of the Sorrowful Virgin

At the junction of Szabó Gyula Street and Erdei Street, in the former Sikabony border, in an area of a few square meters, surrounded by an iron fence, the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows was erected. ; Under the cross, Mary holds Christ taken down from the cross in her lap. On the pedestal of the statue, on the black marble tablet placed in 2002, we find the following inscription: ; ; “Oh painful saint; Our Virgin Mother; To you sighs; our dear homeland. ; We honor you fervently; Do not leave your people alone. ; Erected 1886; Renovated 2002; SIKABONY” ; ; The current inscription is contradicted by the Sikabony chronicler, who, according to him, this can be read on the statue, which he also dated earlier, in 1865: ; "Oh, painful; Our Holy Virgin Mother,; sighs for you; our poor country,; it fervently honors you,; bless the Hungarian nation!";; Thus, either he recorded the text inaccurately in 1955, or the original text on the pedestal may have been so damaged by the 2002 renovation that the missing parts were supplemented during the repair - according to the inscription on the current plaque.
