The "old cemetery" of Sikabony
Cemeteries, tombstones, graves
“The old cemetery lies along the Nagyabony highway. It is now so full of grave mounds that it is hardly possible to bury anyone in it,” writes the Sikabony chronicle in 1955. From the darkness of oblivion, the memory of this old cemetery emerges only from former visitations, from the pages and descriptions of military maps from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, and from the Sikabony chronicle. Its former large (wooden) cross was erected in 1822 by Ferenc Matis and Julianna Szakál. ; The fallen graves and toppled tombstones in the area, now overgrown with trees and bushes, indicate that the ancient cemetery of Sikabony stood here for centuries.
