The Gates of Hope
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
Székelykapu at the border crossing of the divided settlement, Nagyszelmenc (SK) - Kisszelmenc (UA). ; ; The first thing that attracted attention, and perhaps also initiated the idea, was István Zelei's book Kettézárt falu, published on April 15, 2000, the book launch of which was held on the border that was still separated by barbed wire at the time. The locals reported on the still-standing "Berlin Wall" on numerous forums, in order to achieve a reopening of the gate between families and acquaintances. From this effort, the idea arose that the unity and belonging of the Hungarian village divided in two on the Slovak-Ukrainian border would be symbolized by a Székelykapu. The masterpiece made by the hands of Transylvanian craftsmen thus became a symbol of the local people's faith in their belonging and their hope for future unification.
