The well of the Párkány cemetery
Cemeteries, tombstones, graves
The story of the well was published in the 27th issue of the XXXIII. year of the Vasárnapi Ujság, 1886, under the title Kegyeletes özgördás (Pious Care): ; In the parish cemetery of the small town of Párkány in Esztergom County, a zealous and enthusiastic member of the village, pharmacist István Klement, driven by the pious intention of providing refreshing dew to the lawns, bushes and flowers covering the graves of the dead even in dry weather, dug a well at his own expense and asked the editor of our newspaper to have a few lines of inscription by a well-known poet placed above this pious well. The well was built in a suitable center of the cemetery and with its abundant water fully ensures the noble intention nurtured by its creator. Its sides are lined with bricks inside, and on top, on a pretty red marble slab, engraved in gold letters, is a small occasional poem, which a well-known colleague of our newspaper, at the request of the owner, wrote with great skill and made available to the owner of the well. ; The six-line poem, which expresses the noble idea and gracious purpose of the well, follows here: ; When the tears dry up in the eyes of the mourners, ; Or they too go to the grave to their loved ones, ; And there is no dew on the grass in the summer heat: ; I water thirsty flowers, ; So that the graves may be greener ; And the sleep below may be lighter! ; (April 1886)
