The Nemesgomba Castle

Building, structure

The first noble residence in Gombay was the fortified castle of the Gombay family, which is also mentioned in contemporary documents (1364). We do not know its shape or the place where it stood. In the 1760s, Archbishop György Szelepcsényi had a Renaissance castle built in the village surrounded by a fortress wall. The palace, which served as a residence, stood in a square courtyard surrounded by four fortress walls reinforced with towers at the corners. At the beginning of the 19th century, the large estate and the castle were purchased by Lajos Udvarnoky, who chose it as his family residence. The unnecessary fortress walls were demolished together with the towers, and the palace was rebuilt into a classicist castle. After several changes of ownership, the castle was confiscated in 1945 and a school was opened in it. However, since 1980 the building has been empty and its condition is now critical, although it was privatized in 1995. ; Behind the castle lies an extensive English park, which was laid out in the first half of the 19th century and expanded and modernized in 1883 by the gardener Károly Rosenburg. A moat runs around the park, which ensured the irrigation of the 20-hectare area. 40 valuable trees and bushes have survived in the park to this day. In the first part of the park there is a concrete pool of the Wiener Welten family. Above it, on a small hill, rises the stylish building of the water tower built in the second half of the 19th century.
