The Catholic Cemetery of Nagymegyer

The cemetery at the end of Szent István Street is the largest cemetery in the city. In 2013, there were 1,848 graves in it, so the city government is looking into the possibility of opening a new cemetery. We do not know the exact date of its establishment. However, we do know that this is the second cemetery for Catholics. The first cemetery was on today's church hill, around the Catholic church, in the Middle Ages. The renovated mortuary of the cemetery is used jointly by the Catholic and Reformed churches. In the middle of the cemetery is the chapel built by the Wéber family in 1910, with a large cross in front of it. The cemetery contains the graves of many former Nagymegyer ecclesiastical (Lipót Fehér, Lajos Tremmel, József Marczy) and secular dignitaries and cultural figures (Dr. József Szaiff, Chief Military Physician, Mór Bartal, founder of the choir, Pál Hencz, director and teacher, Tibor Varga, actor). On the outer wall of the Wéber Chapel we find the memorial plaque of the 14th martyr of Arad, Lieutenant Colonel Lajos Kazinczy.
