The memorial wall and plaques of the renovated prisoner of war cemetery in Nagymegyer

On October 13, 2008, in Belgrade, the Prime Ministers of Serbia and Czechoslovakia signed an agreement on the mutual care of military graves. As a result, the restoration of the military cemetery began. As a result of the restoration work, a cross was placed parallel to the small chapel here, trees were planted and the previously overgrown area was completely cleared. ; The former mayor of Nagymegyer, engineer Ladislav Rudicky, played a major role in the restoration of the so-called Serbian cemetery, who maintained regular contact with the Embassy of Serbia in Slovakia and the Association of Serbs in Slovakia during the restoration work. He himself often accompanied delegations visiting our city to the cemetery and paid tribute to their memory. During this period, high-ranking Serbian delegations visited our city several times a year. That is why the restoration work was able to continue. An important milestone in this was April 14, 2019, when, along with military honors, the memorial wall consisting of five memorial plaques was unveiled on the edge of the military cemetery. Its construction was initiated by the local government led by Mayor Sámuel Lojkovič, and its unveiling was ensured by the city's new mayor, Gergő Holényi. The event was attended by Róbert Ondrejcsák, State Secretary of the Ministry of National Defense, Slobodan Filipović, State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense of Montenegro, Momčilo Babić, Ambassador of Serbia to Slovakia, Steluţa Arhire, Ambassador of Romania to Slovakia, Andrey Shabanov representing the Russian Embassy, Marija Lakic Barfus, First Secretary of the Embassy of Montenegro, Dragan Samardžić, Security Officer of the Embassy, and Giuseppe Gimondo representing the Italian Embassy, and Csaba Vida representing the Embassy of Hungary. The renovation of the cemetery continued from April 14, 2019 to April 2020. The renovation of the fence surrounding the war cemetery was completed, and on its inner part, the Association of Serbs in Slovakia placed nearly 20 memorial plaques, which contain the names of nearly 6,000 Serbian prisoners of war buried here.
