Allegory of Work and the Arts
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
This part of Bratislava was home to petty officials and workers at the beginning of the 20th century. The well-considered urban development is indicated by the fact that we can find high-quality works of art on practically every street. The street facade of the residential building at 10 Dobrovits Mihály Street is decorated with a large bronze relief by István Tóth entitled Allegory of Work and the Arts. According to the Slovak monument register, the building was built around 1910. István Tóth (Szombathely, November 9, 1861 – Budapest, December 12, 1934) was a Hungarian sculptor. He completed his studies at the Vienna Academy and then settled in Budapest. In 1908, he participated in the Miklós Bartha sculpture competition. He designed numerous ecclesiastical statues, public monuments and genre figures. He combines the pursuit of formal beauty with a naturalistic approach. He rests in the Church of Saint Quirin in Szombathely, and his grave was declared part of the National Cemetery in category "A" by the National Memorial and Tribute Committee.
