Monument to the Millennium Celebrations
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
In the courtyard of the village hall we find the monument of the millennium celebrations. The inhabitants of the village of Búcs had it erected in 1899 from pink marble to commemorate the conquest. There was an inscription on the front of the obelisk, which was however carved out, apparently during the time of the first Czechoslovak Republic. According to local tradition, it was a monument to the tragic death of Elisabeth, the popular empress of Szisz. On April 12, 1896, during the millennium celebrations, twenty lime trees were planted in the part of the village called "Land of Lakes", and a stone column was erected to commemorate the event with the following inscription: "Elevated in memory of the thousand-year existence of Hungary under the notaryship of Judge András Nagy and József Vargha in 1896." The stone column no longer exists today, it was removed after 1920. Perhaps the marble obelisk replaces it.
