The wine cellars of Lukanénye

Building, structure

The gold of Hegyalja: the wine of Nénye. ; During 1599. The winemaking of Lukanénye and its surroundings, one of the important wine regions of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, called Honti or from other sources Nénye Hegyalja, was among the oldest and most significant since the introduction of winemaking in Central Europe. Contemporary documents prove that wine was already being transported to Buda from the northern part of the Ipolyvölgye in the 15th century, but the heyday of Hegyalja wine was brought by the Turkish conquest. (2000.,35.) ; ; The cellars and wine houses in the vineyards of Nénye were built of carved stone or carved into sandstone. /.../ For a long time we did not know how the ventilation holes of medieval cellars (often more than 10 m) were drilled so perfectly vertically and precisely where they were needed, until Nozdrovicky and his colleagues discovered in 1985 that it was possible in the past, and still is possible today, to do this simply by hand, with a simple drill and extension shafts attached to the screw of the grape press.
