The Catholic Church of Hontfüzesgyarmat
Building, structure
Between 1423 and 1442, the Archbishop of Esztergom, György Pálóczy, had a church built in the settlement. The colonial church, built in the Gothic style, was supposedly the very first church in the Szikince Valley. It was surrounded by a three-row earthen rampart and then a huge stone wall, which was intended to protect the population. The church was damaged during the Ottomans, but was later rebuilt in the Baroque style and a tower was added to it. The sanctuary of the single-nave church has a polygonal closure. The sanctuary is surrounded by buttresses on the outside. The windows of the sanctuary also preserve their Gothic character. The sanctuary has a sacristy niche dating from 1480. The stone baptismal font from the time of the church construction also deserves mention.
