Memorial wall of the Holocaust victims in Dunaszerdahely

In the Jewish cemetery of Sikabony, a large memorial wall was completed in June 2014, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Holocaust, based on the designs of artist Adrienn Kutak, on which the names of the Jewish victims of Dunaszerdahely were displayed. The names of the 2,735 Holocaust victims were collected by Tibor Kornfeld, one of the leaders of the Dunaszerdahely Jewish Community. ; ; The Jewish community of Dunaszerdahely, once referred to as Little Palestine, formed one of the most significant and flourishing Orthodox communities in the region from the 18th century. During the Second World War, in 1944, the Jews were first gathered in a ghetto established in the city center, around the Jewish Great Church, and then on June 14, 1944, the community of almost 3,000 people, which constituted more than half of the population, was deported to concentration camps in sixty freight cars. The event became one of the most moving and moving days in the history of Dunaszerdahely to this day. ; ; The unveiling of the monument, which was handed over at the commemoration on June 29, 2014, was attended by Alexander Ben-Zvi, Israel's ambassador to Slovakia, Zoltán Hájos, mayor of Dunaszerdahely, Sándor Dakó, city representative, Pavel Traubner, honorary president of the Central Federation of the Slovak Jewish Community, as well as the leadership of the local Jewish community (Tibor Kornfeld, Tibor Feldmár), its members, representatives of the Catholic and Reformed churches, and citizens of Dunaszerdahely.
