Memorial to the victims of the Holocaust in Losonc
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
The ancestors of the Jewish community of Losonc settled in the then independent market town of Losonc-Tugár at the beginning of the 19th century, whose Reformed landlord, Silas and Pilis, not only permitted this, but also supported it. The community immortalized his memory with a marble plaque on the facade of the neoclassical morgue built in 1909. At the beginning of the 20th century, a significant number of Jews in Losonc had a Hungarian identity and contributed significantly to the development of the city. A monumental synagogue was built in 1925, and their number exceeded two thousand at that time. In May 1944, the Jewish population was locked in a ghetto, and in June they were deported to Auschwitz. The number of known victims is 1,225. Their memory was immortalized by the few who survived the Holocaust. The memorial erected next to the Jewish cemetery mortuary is a standing torch-like column made of stone, with a Star of David embossed on it and the years 1939-1945. The marble plaque placed in a rectangular block attached to it bears an inscription in Slovak-Hungarian-Hebrew in memory of the martyrs. ; Every year, in May, the religious community and the city hold a commemoration in front of the monument.
