The White Castle

Building, structure

In Újfalu (in the former part of Dunaszerdahely, which was separated from Szerdahely by only one street, today's Fő Street), there stood the "late classicist-style, two-storey, two-axis building, closed with a tympanum, divided by square windows and pilasters, with an emphasized central projection" - or as it is commonly known, the White Castle. ; The noble mansion was built by a member of the Benefai Bacsák family, who also owned land here, hussar captain Móric Bacsák, in the early 1800s. ; The former site of the White Castle was previously occupied by the Bacsák mansion - we can already find this old manor house on a map from 1796, adjacent to the Kondék plot on the left and the Bacsák plot on the right, on which they also had a guest inn - one of the oldest guest inns in Szerdahely to our knowledge. ; The new castle, called the White, was built as a two-story building, with vaulted ground-floor rooms, and the part of its garden facing the main street was bordered by two small round bastions (rondella), fenced with a brick wall. The servants' apartments were located on the right side of the park-like courtyard stretching back, and the stables and farm buildings were located on the left side. It was considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the city; in 1849, the commander of the passing Austrian troops stayed in this building. It probably got its name because it was new and beautiful, and neat, and not because of its color. ; In the 19th century, the noble family left the town, and the castle changed hands: at the end of the 1800s, it was owned by the Habermann family, who also owned the Yellow Castle, from whom it was bought by Vilmos Wosner in 1910. The rondelles in the front garden of the castle were demolished in 1920, symbolically, in the year of Trianon. ; From 1957 it became the property of the city of Dunaszerdahely, and the Csallóközi Museum operated there between 1964 and 1970. Shortly after the museum was moved to the Yellow Castle – after the communist city government “locked down” the White Castle and declared it dangerous to life – it was demolished to build a new post office in its place.
