The World War I prisoner of war cemetery in Dunaszerdahely

Cemeteries, tombstones, graves

The cemetery of the Dunaszerdahely World War I prisoner of war camp operated in Sikabony between 1914 and 1918. ; Cholera, typhus, and dysentery were common in the camp, especially among young prisoners, and infectious diseases, which often resulted in death, appeared in Dunaszerdahely with the establishment of the camp and its first inhabitants. The dead were mainly laid to rest in the military cemetery next to the old cemetery in Sikabony due to infection, although archival data clearly show that prisoners of war were also buried in other public cemeteries at the time – such as the one in Sikabony, the old cemetery in Szerdahely, the one in Tejedi, and even the Jewish cemetery – although only a few were buried there. ; Between 1914 and 1918, according to archival data, a total of 965 deceased Russian, Italian, Polish, Hungarian (!), Romanian, Serbian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Estonian, and Finnish prisoners of war were buried in the Sikabony military cemetery. ; The storms of history, but also carelessness, severely battered the military cemetery, making it a neglected and undignified place, but 2014 marked a turning point in its "history", as the Csallóköz-Szerdahelyi Kaszinó 1860 City Protection Association, civilians, and the city of Dunaszedahely managed to put it in order and transform it into a worthy memorial site. Although the placement of the grave crosses is still in progress, and the precise identification of those buried in the graves is ongoing – according to previous data, only 460 military dead were known, which was overwritten by this year's research – on November 11, 2014, the anniversary of the end of World War I, the Dunaszerdahely World War I cemetery was handed over to Dunaszerdahely by civil initiators and the city leadership.
