The Millencentennial Memorial Column of the Csemads
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
At the regional conference of the Csemads (March 23, 1996), the design of the Csemads' millencentennial memorial column was presented, which was made by Gábor Ferdics, a sculptor from Dunaszerdahely. The delegates proposed a collection to cover the financial expenses of the memorial column. It was recorded in a resolution (IV.1., IV./3. no.) that the basic organizations should consistently enforce the spirit of the 1100th anniversary of the conquest of Hungary and the thousand-year-old traditions of the Hungarian school in their activities throughout the year, and that they should regularly support the Gyurcsó István Foundation and the expenses necessary for the establishment of the Csemads' memorial site to be established in Bős, according to their means. Half of the expenses were covered by the foundation from donations from the basic organizations, and the rest from the foundation's capital. ; The memorial column was inaugurated on June 23 during the Csemadok district cultural festival. Iván Fenes, mayor of Bős, gave a welcoming speech, and Győző Bauer, national president of Csemadok, gave a ceremonial speech. ; As a result of the nationalist atmosphere characteristic of the time and the activity of Matica slovenská, the memorial column of the conquest of the Slovak Republic was reported to the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Slovak Republic three days after the inauguration, on June 26, 1996, citing that the regional committee had not requested a construction permit from the district office. The Ministry ordered an investigation through the Environmental Protection Department of the District Office. The office ordered a hearing on the case six weeks later, on August 8, and requested the regional committee to express its opinion on the memorial column in the letter. The minutes in which the regional committee presented its position were prepared on August 28. On September 24, the regional committee received the orders of the Environmental Protection Department of the District Office, in which they were punished for violating the Construction Act, for erecting the “Monument to the 1100th Anniversary of the Arrival of Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin”. Order 96/50 568-DS sentenced the monument to be demolished within 30 days, and based on order 96/50 568-DS-pok., a fine of 100,000 crowns was imposed on the regional committee, to be paid within 15 days. On October 14, the regional committee appealed the orders to the district office. The replies confirming the district office's orders and rejecting the appeal were received from the Environmental Protection Department of the Nagyszombat District Office on November 11 and December 19, and could only be protested against in court. The regional committee asked lawyer Oszkár Világi to provide legal representation. Based on the decision of the district court on June 10, 1997, the monument did not have to be demolished, but the 100,000 crown fine was left in force.
