The Reformed Church of Csécs

Building, structure

The oldest building in the village is the 13th century Reformed church built in the early Gothic style. The frescoes inside the church were made in the early 14th century. The building has been declared a national cultural monument. Near the church stands the 18th century wooden belfry, the large bell of which was made in the 15th-16th centuries. ; In the immediate vicinity stands a wooden belfry, in which one of the two bells dates back to the Middle Ages, the 15th-16th centuries. ; It was dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist with all its splendor. The Gothic frescoes in the sanctuary were made in the mid-14th century. In addition to the late Byzantine style features, the 14th-century Italian style influences can also be discovered on the wall paintings. Most of them depict biblical stories, such as the Annunciation to Mary, the birth of Jesus, the Herodian infanticide, the flight into Egypt, the child Jesus teaching in the temple, the shroud of Veronica, the prayer on the Mount of Olives, the Last Supper, Christ before Pilate, the Crucifixion and other biblical stories. The pulpit dates from 1763. The building has retained its original medieval character, with a separate bell tower without a tower. The church has been a parish church of the Reformed Church since 1702.
