The Church of St. Margaret of Antioch in Bősi
Building, structure
The (former) church of Bős was certainly already standing in the second third of the 14th century. ; “This church once had glorious and distinguished patrons, primarily a certain Margaret, who came from noble blood. She raised (the church) from its former ruins, had it rebuilt, and after, due to the vicissitudes of time and the long-term abandonment, it was no longer known which saint it was built in honor of, she dedicated and consecrated it to her own patron saint, Saint Margaret, virgin and martyr,” writes parish priest János Huszár (1885–1902), a chronicler, in the historia domus based on former registry entries and visitations. ; In 1648, “The noble lady Orsolya Petczl, the noble lord Bernát Amade, the widow of the deputy palatine of Hungary, had this church restored for the second time and had the tower built.” ; In 1670, the patron, the Amadé family, had it restored. In 1750, “(the parish) house with a fence, is in complete need of repair, just like the teacher’s house.” In the 1770s, Count Tádé Amadé Várkonyi had the church completely rebuilt in Baroque style. At that time, the Baroque-Classicist side altar of the Virgin Mary, the architectural frame of the late Baroque main altar, and the roadside statue of Saint John of Nepomuk were completed, among others. ; In the 1780s, the main nave and the tower of the church were rebuilt. ; The shingle roof of the church burned down in the fire of 1866, which is why “in 1884 the church was completely renovated” and a neo-Baroque chapel and sacristy were added. ; In 1903, a new organ was installed in the church, built by the organ manufacturer from Bratislava, Vincze Mozsny. The organ was played by the organist. Ignác Glöckl, the parish priest of Dercsika, was benedicted. The church tower, the sanctuary, the sacristy and the oratory were completely renovated within a year. ; At that time, three frescoes by Archbishop Teodor Székházy of Újvár were completed: the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, Golgotha (a copy of the work of Mihály Munkácsy) and the one on the triumphal arch depicting Jesus among the children. The blessing of the renovated church was performed by József Vázsonyi, the parish priest of Dunaszerdahely, with the assistance of a prominent church. The benefactor, Count Amade Emil Üchtritz, with his wife and sons, was present at the ceremony. ; In 1929, the painting depicting Saint Margaret of Antioch, the work of the Nitra painter Michal Fay, was replaced on the main altar of the church. ; In 1965–66, the interior of the church was renovated, and in the 1970s, the sacral relics of Bős were moved from their previous location to be grouped around the church. ; In 1989, the new external plastering of the church, the roofing and the copper covering of the tower spire were completed, and then in the early 1990s–2000s, the interior of the church and then its organ were renovated.
