The Bittó family tomb

Statue, monument, memorial plaque

The family tomb, the burial place of Prime Minister István Bittó, was renovated in 2003 with the support of the Pro Patria Association for National Heritage, the Ministry of National Cultural Heritage and the Illyés Public Foundation. On the occasion of the 190th anniversary of his birth, a memorial plaque was unveiled in 2012. ; ; István Bittó of Sárosfa and Nádasdi (Sárosfa, May 3, 1822 – Budapest, Terézváros, March 7, 1903) was a Hungarian politician, prime minister, real inner privy councilor, and member of the House of Lords. ; Life: ; He was born in Sárosfán, Bratislava County, the son of Benjámin Bittó, the vice-governor of the county, and Júlia Nagy. He began his career as a clerk in Moson County. In 1848 he was elected as a member of parliament, which forced him to go into hiding after the defeat of the War of Independence. He returned home in 1851 and moved to Somogy County, where he lived in seclusion. He became a member of the Szigetvár district in 1861, and again in 1865. In 1869 he was elected in Abrudbánya. He won the trust of Ferenc Deák. ; Between 1871 and 1872 he was Minister of Justice in the Andrássy government, then in the Lónyay government. He resigned before the fall of the latter government and served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1872 to 1874. On 24 March 1874 he was given the mandate to form a government. This was the last attempt to form a government based on the Deák Party. Since Lónyay and Sennyey were the most popular within the party, Bittó's situation was not easy. When Kálmán Tisza announced on February 3, 1875, that the formation of parties had a public law basis, the formation of parties began - on the other hand, István Bittó's role in government ended. He is the only former prime minister who openly joined the opposition. He was a member of parliament for the Moderate Opposition until 1884, and then temporarily retired from politics. In 1899, he was appointed a member of the House of Lords, where he remained active until his death.
