The Barkóczy Palace
Building, structure
A two-storey Baroque palace built in a closed row in the Western wall of the main square. The most decorative element of the five-axis facade, divided by very pronounced pilasters, is the stone-framed main gate, decorated with capitals carved from stone on both sides and held by Baroque statues, above which we find an arched, stone-railed balcony on the first floor. The windows of the main facade are decorated with highly plastic cornices and plastered frames. ; The building was built in the first half of the 18th century by the scholar Bishop of Eger, later Archbishop and Prince-Primate of Esztergom, Count Ferenc Barkóczy (1710-1765), for his own residence. In 1805, when Vienna no longer provided security due to Napoleon's army advancing eastward, King Franz I had his children brought to Hungary. They found refuge in this palace in Košice. ; Today, the building houses some departments of the city library.
