The Catholic Church of Bacsfa-Szentantal
Building, structure
Bacsfa was united with the villages of Szent-György-Úr and Szentantal in ancient times, the latter being a significant pilgrimage site even today. Archbishop György Lippay of Esztergom had a church and monastery built near Szent-György-Úr. The foundation stone was laid in 1660, but after the archbishop's death (1666) the construction stopped. After the consecration of György Szelepcsényi as archbishop, the construction continued. ; The high altar was built by Count György Lippay in 1782, but by then the church already had a significant history. The church has valuable and original Art Nouveau interior painting, which was created around 1900. The church was built in Baroque style. There is a picture of the Virgin Mary on the high altar and one of the crypts in the basement of the church was the burial place of the Apponyi family. ; The church in Szent-György-Úr was consecrated on October 1, 1724 by Bishop György Ghyllányi. However, before that, the church had been consecrated to Saint Anthony of Padua, hence the name of the village Szentantal. In 1718, a terrible windstorm raged, which destroyed the roof, and not long after, another storm toppled the tower, breaking the facade. After that, a series of restorations followed.
