Memorial column to the heroes of World War II in Nagymegyer

In 1991, the Csemadok Nagymegyer Organization initiated the erection of a monument in memory of the heroes of Nagymegyer during World War II. A fundraiser was launched on the back of the initiative, as a result of which the original idea had to be modified. Instead of the monument, a memorial column was created by György Lipcsey, a sculptor from Dunaszerdahely. A weeping mother's head can be seen on the top of the memorial column. Its circular base was provided by the city government at its own expense. The ceremonial unveiling of the memorial column took place on November 2, 1991, in the presence of more than 300 people. 34 students of the Hungarian-language high school that opened that year stood around the base of the memorial column with burning candles in their hands. At that time, the bells of the churches of Nagymegyer rang for the first time in memory of the 115 heroes.
